DESCRIPTION:Cage Free Concerts presents our friends Simon and Nic to fascinate and inspire us with their signature pairing of Hammered Dulcimer with foot percussion/dance. Nic Gareiss (percussive dance\, vocals) and Simon Chrisman (hammered dulcimer\, vocals) met in 2007 at a fiddle festival in the Californian redwoods and have been exploring sound and movement together ever since. Both leading innovators within their practices\, Nic and Simon mesh their unique approaches\, weaving traditional percussive dance\, instrumental tunes\, improvisations\, traditional songs\, and new compositions through interlocking rhythms and dynamic textures. Well-known for his work with the groundbreaking new acoustic string bands Kittel & Co. and the Bee Eaters\, Simon’s music combines “chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.” (Boston Herald) One of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch\,” Nic Gareiss has been hailed for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” (New York Times) and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. DESCRIPTION:The award winning and highly acclaimed band Le Vent du Nord are a leading force in Québec’s exciting and progressive Francophone folk movement. The group’s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions\, while their highly rhythmic and soulful music\, rooted in the Celtic diaspora\, is enhanced with a broad range of global influences. \nSince first launching in August 2002\, Le Vent du Nord has released 13 albums and racking up several prestigious awards\, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros\, two Junos (Canada’s Grammys)\, a Félix at ADISQ\, a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and “Artist of the Year” at Folk Alliance Annual Gala. \nThe group regularly appear on Canadian\, American\, French\, and UK television and radio and have participated in a wide variety of special musical projects that exhibit their great finesse and flexibility.
